Sink Not Draining but No Clog: Canton, MA Guide
By Canton 24/7 Plumbing, 2026
If you have cleaned the stopper, pulled the trap and still see the water crawl, the blockage is probably not in the sink at all. A sink that will not drain with a clear trap points to a vent that is not letting air in, a pipe that has lost its slope, or a clog farther down the line that the sink shares with other fixtures.
The order you check these in saves time. Start with the cheap, five-minute tests and stop when you find the pattern.
First, make sure the trap really was the clear part
Pull the P-trap with a bucket underneath and look at the pipe on both sides, not just the curve. A plug often sits in the horizontal arm that runs into the wall, a few inches past where you stopped looking. Slide a flashlight in or feed a hand auger gently into the wall stub.
Check the tailpiece under the sink drain too. In a kitchen, the strainer basket and the short pipe below it can collect a ring of grease that restricts flow without looking like a clog. Scrape it with a bottle brush.
The elimination test, in order
Fill both sinks and let one go
Plug the basin, fill it, and release the water. A fast, full-bore rush that stops slowly at the end suggests a partial restriction downstream. A slow trickle from the start suggests a fully blocked branch.
Listen for gurgling
A gurgle as the water leaves means air is being pulled through the trap because the vent is not supplying it. The sink may then drain slowly and smell.
Run a second fixture on the same wall
If the bathroom sink drains well but the tub next to it gurgles, the shared branch is the suspect. If only one sink is slow, look at that fixture's own pipe.
Check the lowest drain in the house
Pour a gallon of water into a basement floor drain. If it backs up or bubbles when upstairs water runs, the main line is part of the story.
Why a sink can be slow when nothing is stuck
| Cause | Telltale sign | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked or frozen roof vent | Gurgling, slow drain, sewer smell, worse in cold weather | Plumber, since it means roof access |
| Pipe with too little slope | Water slow in one run, standing water in the pipe | Plumber, because pipe must be re-hung |
| Partial clog in a shared branch | Two or more fixtures slow, others normal | Plumber with a cable machine |
| Disposal or dishwasher line | Kitchen sink slow only when the dishwasher runs | Homeowner can check the hose, then call |
| Grease or mineral scale on the pipe wall | Chronic slow drain that returns after cabling | Plumber, often with a camera or a jet |
| Main line restriction | Floor drain gurgles, several fixtures slow | Plumber with camera and cleanout access |
Vents: the part you cannot see
Every drain needs air behind the water. A vent stack runs through the wall and out the roof so the water leaving a trap does not create a vacuum. When the vent is blocked by a bird nest, leaves, or ice, the water slows, the trap can siphon dry, and you hear gurgling from the nearest drain.
You can test this without going on the roof. If the slow sink gurgles loudest right after a toilet on the same floor flushes, or several fixtures gurgle together, the vent is the likely cause. Roof work is a job for a pro, so do not climb up in winter.
When the dishwasher or disposal is the hidden restriction
In a double-bowl kitchen sink, the dishwasher hose and the disposal outlet join the same drain line. A kinked hose or a dishwasher drain that is not looped up high can let dirty water back into the sink. The disposal's knockout plug, which must be removed when a dishwasher is first connected, can also sit in the outlet and block it.
If the sink drains slowly only while the dishwasher is running, look at the hose first. Disconnect power before you reach into a disposal, and never put a hand in it.
Is it the branch or the main?
Signs the problem is in the branch
- Only one sink or one bathroom group is slow
- The basement floor drain stays quiet
- The water clears briefly after a cable pass
- The slowdown started with a change near that sink
Signs it is the main line
- Floor drain gurgles when upstairs water runs
- Toilets, tubs and sinks are all slow
- Water appears in a lower fixture
- A sewage smell rises from a basement drain
Stop here and make the call
Sewage or gray water backs up in a tub or floor drain
Stop using water. Keep children and pets away and wear gloves and boots if you must go near it.
You smell gas near a water heater or furnace
Leave the building and call 911 or the gas utility. Do not use a switch or open flame.
The trap and the arm are clear and the sink still drains slowly
You are past DIY. A camera will show what a snake cannot.
You would need to climb a roof
Winter roofs and vent stacks are a fall risk.
Cost factors for a slow drain with no obvious clog
Pricing depends on how long it takes to find the cause. A trap-and-arm clear is quick. A vent diagnosis, a camera run, or a cable through the main takes longer and adds equipment time. A roof vent job adds access.
The real number comes from a call, and you hear the price before work starts.
Canton, MA: winter vents, thaw and water chemistry
Canton has New England winters with freezing weather and nor'easters. A vent pipe that exits the roof can frost over during a hard freeze, so a sink that drains fine in October and gurgles in January should make you suspect the vent before the trap.
Canton's water comes from a mix of MWRA supply and seven town wells, and the town reports treating for iron and manganese. The town's report does not give a hardness figure, so ask the Canton Water/Sewer Division or test your own tap. If you find hard water, mineral scale on a pop-up and tailpiece can slow a sink drain without a visible clog.
Spring thaw and heavy rain load basements. If your floor drain gurgles during that weather while the sinks upstairs drain slowly, the line may be taking on water at old joints. That is a camera question, not a trap problem.

Canton, MA questions on this topic
Could a frozen vent make my Canton sink drain slowly in winter?
Yes. A vent pipe that exits the roof can frost over or clog with ice in a hard freeze, and the symptom is gurgling and a slow drain that eases in warmer weather. Do not climb a winter roof. A plumber can clear the vent safely and check the drain.
Why does my kitchen sink only drain slowly when the dishwasher runs?
The dishwasher drain shares your sink's trap line. A kinked hose, a hose that is not looped high, or a disposal outlet still blocked by its knockout plug can all push water back. Check the hose route first, then call if it persists.
Is a gurgling sink drain an emergency?
Gurgling alone is not an emergency, but it can signal a partial blockage that will worsen. If a floor drain also bubbles or sewage smells appear, stop using water and call dispatch.
Do I need a permit to fix a slow drain in Canton?
Under 248 CMR 3.05, clearing a stoppage does not need a permit. Re-piping a drain to fix its slope does. Ask the Canton Building Department about your specific job.

The Dedham-Westwood Water District's 2025 report put Westwood water in the moderately hard range, which is one reason scale can build up in tailpieces there, and our Stoughton page covers the town just south of Canton.
