When a drain has been snaked and is blocked again a few weeks later, the cable is not the problem. The pipe wall is. If sewage is rising in your Canton, MA home right now, that is an emergency and our 24/7 dispatch can send a licensed plumber, and the best thing you can do while you wait is stop using water.

Hydro jetting is the use of a high-pressure water hose with a forward and rear-facing nozzle to scour the inside of a drain or sewer line. Where a cable punches a hole, a jet washes the grease, silt and root hairs off the full circumference of the pipe.

The snake got stuck, or the clog is back in a few weeks

These are the stories that usually end in a jetting visit. Each one points to something a cable cannot finish.

The cable stopped at the same spot

A cable that hits resistance at the same distance twice has found a root mass, a heavy grease plug or a damaged joint.

Clear for a week, then slow again

The cable bored a hole through the blockage and left the coating on the wall. The hole closes up as new debris sticks to the old.

The snake came back with grease or sludge

Greasy, gray residue on the cable means the pipe is lined with fat. Cabling moves it a few feet and it settles again.

Fine roots on the cable head

Hair-like roots mean the line is being fed water from a joint. Cutting them grows them back thicker.

Sewage backing up and the cable is not working

If the main line is full and a rental machine or a first plumber already failed, treat it as urgent. Standing sewage in a basement is a health problem as well as a flood.

  1. Stop all water use

No flushing, showers, dishwasher or laundry. Every fixture on the line drains into the same blocked pipe.

  2. Leave the cable machine alone

Pushing a rented cable harder into a stuck line can wedge it. A plumber would rather retrieve one clean head than a broken length.

  3. Keep people out of the wet area

Sewage water carries bacteria. Keep children and pets away.

  4. Shut off power in wet areas only if it is safe

If water is near outlets, a furnace or a panel, do not wade in. Call the utility or an electrician if you cannot reach the breaker from dry ground.

  5. Call the 24/7 line

Tell dispatch what was already tried, how far the cable went and what came back on it. That shortens the diagnosis on arrival.

Hydro jet or cable machine: how to choose

Neither tool is better in general. The right one depends on what the blockage is made of and what you want the pipe to look like afterward.

How a jetting visit works

A jetting machine pumps water through a flexible hose at a pressure set by the operator, commonly in the low thousands of pounds per square inch. The nozzle has several jets, mostly pointed backward. Those backward jets pull the hose forward through the pipe and throw debris back toward the opening.

The plumber starts with a nozzle that fits the pipe diameter and works from a cleanout or a pulled toilet flange. A penetrating nozzle drives through a hard plug. A spinning or fan-style nozzle then cleans the wall on the way back. The hose is pulled out slowly so that the cleaned material washes toward an accessible point where it can be caught.

Root intrusion in the line

Roots do not break pipes open. They find a hairline gap at a joint and send in feeder roots after moisture. Over a few seasons the hairs thicken into a mat that catches toilet paper and fat.

A root cutter on a cable opens the channel fast, which matters when the house is backing up. Jetting follows to wash out the shreds. It also leaves a clean wall so the camera can show the joint where the roots entered. Without a repair at that joint, expect regrowth, often in a year or two depending on the tree and soil moisture.

Grease, soap and scale: the coating problem

Kitchen lines and older laundry lines narrow slowly. Fat cools on the pipe wall, soap binds to it, and lint and coffee grounds stick to that. By the time the drain stops, the bore can be a fraction of its original size even though water still trickles through.

Jetting restores the full bore. In a hot-water capable machine the heat helps soften fat. Mineral scale and rust flakes behave differently, because they are part of the pipe surface in some older materials, and a plumber will judge how much pressure the pipe can stand before pushing it. If your drains carry a lot of kitchen waste, ask about periodic maintenance through our drain cleaning service so the buildup never gets this far.

Cable did not hold and the drain is blocked again?

Dispatch can send a plumber with a jetting machine and camera, day or night, including weekends.

Camera before and after

A jetting visit that skips the camera is a guess. These are the steps we follow so you can see what was done.

  1. Look first

A camera on a push rod shows the blockage type, any cracks, offsets or bellies, and whether jetting is safe for that pipe.

  2. Choose the nozzle and pressure

The video decides the plan. A rooted clay joint and a greasy cast iron stack get different handling.

  3. Jet the line

The plumber works section by section and watches the flow at the cleanout for debris.

  4. Look again

A second pass with the camera confirms bare pipe. If a defect appeared, you see it on screen and can discuss repair with a recorded sewer camera inspection as the reference.

What jetting cannot fix

A clean pipe is not always a sound pipe. Be wary of any promise that jetting solves a structural problem.

Jetting handles

  • Grease and soap coating
  • Silt and sand deposits
  • Fine roots after cutting
  • Light scale on sound pipe

Jetting cannot handle

  • Cracked or broken pipe
  • A belly that holds standing water
  • Offset or separated joints
  • Pipe that has collapsed

Cast iron and old pipe: where we hold back

Cast iron pipe corrodes from the inside, building tubercles of rust that shrink the bore. Aggressive jetting can knock those off, and in a thin wall it can open a pinhole. That is why the camera comes first and why the pressure is set lower on pipe of unknown age.

The same caution applies to clay with offset joints and to Orangeburg, a tar-paper fiber pipe that softens with age. If the camera shows a weak wall, the honest answer may be to clear the line gently and plan a repair through sewer line repair rather than keep scouring it.

Canton's housing, rain and roots

The town's housing plan says much of Canton's residential development dates to the mid to late 20th century, when large suburbs were platted, and about 69 percent of homes are single-family. Houses with mature yard trees and a buried lateral often have root questions. A camera pass shows the actual pipe material and condition, which no one can assume from the street.

Canton sits between Great Blue Hill, ponds and wetlands along Route 138 and I-95, so soils can stay wet through spring thaw and heavy rain. Wet ground draws roots toward joints. If a jet cleans the line and the clog still returns in the wet months, ask for the joint to be marked on the video. Neighbors in Norwood call for the same pattern on older lots.

What affects the price of hydro jetting

Jetting costs more than a simple cable pass because the equipment is larger and the job is slower. The number on your visit depends on several things we can discuss on the phone.

Length and diameter of the line

A short four inch run from a cleanout takes less water and time than a long lateral to the street.

What is in the pipe

Thick grease or a dense root mat means more passes and often a cable first.

Access

A cleanout is quick. No cleanout may mean pulling a toilet or working from a roof vent.

Camera work

Looking before and after adds time and gives you a recording to keep.

Night or weekend dispatch

After-hours calls are priced for the hour, and you hear the price before work starts.

Homeowners policies rarely pay to clean a line. A sewer backup endorsement, if you have one, may cover damage from the backup itself, so read yours before you need it.

Hydro jetting questions in Canton, MA

Do you handle hydro jetting emergencies at night or on weekends in Canton, MA?

Yes. Our dispatch line answers around the clock and a backed-up main line or a floor drain pushing sewage is treated as urgent. Same-day appointments are offered when available for repeat clogs that are slow but not flooding. You hear the price before work starts.

Is hydro jetting better than snaking?

It is better for coatings and repeat clogs, and not necessarily for a single soft clog. A cable opens a channel quickly. A jet cleans the whole wall. Many visits use both: cable first to open the line, then a jet to wash out what the cable loosened.

Can hydro jetting damage my pipes?

It can on weak or old pipe, especially thin cast iron or cracked clay. A camera look before jetting and a pressure set for the pipe lower the risk. If the camera shows damage, the plumber will tell you before using the jet.

Why did my snake get stuck in the line?

Common causes are a root mass the head cannot cut, a bend or offset joint, or a collapsed section. Do not keep forcing it. A camera can show what trapped it, and the answer decides whether you need jetting or a repair.

How often will I need to jet my line?

It depends on the cause. Grease-heavy kitchen lines may need it yearly. Rooted lines may need it until the joint is repaired. If a line stays clean for years after one visit, you probably do not need a schedule.

Do I need a permit for hydro jetting in Canton?

Under 248 CMR 3.05, clearing a stoppage does not need a permit. Repair or replacement of pipe sections usually does. Ask the Canton Building Department about your specific job.
