A plumbing snake works when the clog is within a few feet of the drain opening and made of hair, soap or paper. It fails when the blockage is an object, a root mass or a collapsed pipe, and pushing harder only packs the clog tighter. This guide for Canton, MA homes covers which snake to pick, how to run one, and the signs that tell you to put it down.

Most hardware-store snakes are built for a bathroom sink or a tub. They are not built for a basement floor drain or the pipe running to the street.

Match the snake to the drain

The name on the box matters less than the drain you point it at. Use this as a filter before you buy or rent.

Run a hand auger on a bathroom sink, start to finish

Before you start, put a bucket and old towels under the trap, wear rubber gloves and keep the cleaning chemicals away from the work area.

  1. Remove the stopper and look first

Lift the pop-up if your sink has one. Hair and sludge on the stopper rod are often the whole clog. Pull it out by hand and run hot water.

  2. Take the trap off if the sink is still slow

Loosen the two slip nuts on the P-trap by hand or with channel-lock pliers, slide the bucket under it, and empty it. Check the trap for a plug before you push a cable past it.

  3. Feed the cable into the wall pipe

Put the auger tip into the stub going into the wall. Tighten the thumbscrew a foot from the opening and crank clockwise while you push gently. Back off if the cable kinks.

  4. Work the clog, then pull it out

When the cable stops, crank to bite into the clog, then pull back slowly. Expect a gray tangle on the tip. Repeat until the cable runs free.

  5. Rebuild and test with a full flow

Hand-tighten the slip nuts and a quarter turn more. Run the tap for a full minute and watch the joints for drips. A clear drain empties in a smooth swirl with no gurgle.

What the cable is telling you through your hand

A soft clog feels like wet cotton. The cable slows, bites, and pulls back with a hairy gray mass. A snake is made for that clog.

A hard stop at the same spot every time feels different. The cable hits something and bounces. That may be a toy, a shifted joint or a broken section. If you feel a hard stop, do not force it. A bent cable can wedge in a cracked pipe and you will need a plumber to cut it out.

Springy resistance followed by a sudden give means the head went through a root ball or a wad of wipes. Roots show up as fine pale threads on the tip. They mean the trouble is in the buried line, and a hand auger will not hold the fix for long.

Put the snake down if you see any of these

More than one fixture is slow

A shared branch or the main is blocked. A sink auger will not reach it.

Basement floor drain gurgles or bubbles

That drain is the lowest in the house and shows a main line problem first.

Water or sewage rises when you flush

Stop using water. Keep people and pets out of the wet area and call a plumber.

The cable keeps hitting a hard stop

Forcing it can crack old cast iron or clay pipe and wedge the cable.

You smell gas

Leave the house and call 911 or the gas utility. Do not run a powered machine, light a flame or flip a switch.

When a snake stops being the answer

A cable pokes a hole through a clog. It does not clean the pipe wall. That is why a drain can reopen on Saturday and clog again on Friday.

A snake is a good fit when

  • One fixture is slow and nothing else is
  • The clog is hair, soap scum or a food plug
  • You can reach the trap or a cleanout
  • The drain has not clogged in months

Step up to a jetter or camera when

  • The same drain clogs again within weeks
  • The cable pulls back with grease or scale, not hair
  • You have hit a stop at the same distance twice
  • Several fixtures back up on the same line

Chemical cleaners and the snake do not mix

If you poured a caustic cleaner into the drain, say so before anyone opens the trap. The liquid sits above the clog, and when you pull a slip nut it can splash onto your hands and eyes. Wear splash goggles, long sleeves and rubber gloves, and never mix products, because bleach and ammonia-based cleaners release toxic gas.

Cost factors if you hire it out

The real number comes from a call, because the same "clogged drain" can be a ten-minute trap job or a long main line cable. The price moves with where the blockage sits, whether there is a cleanout, whether a toilet must be pulled to reach the line, and whether a camera checks the pipe afterward.

Night and weekend dispatch is priced for the time it is done. Tell dispatch what you already tried.

Canton, MA: public sewer, older lines and basement drains

Canton receives MWRA sewer service, and the town's 2023 letter reports sewer relining under way in high inflow and infiltration areas. That work is on the public side. If you snake your own drain and the blockage keeps returning, and a neighbor on your street has the same trouble, tell the Canton Water/Sewer Division as well as your plumber so the town can check its main.

Much of Canton's housing was built in the mid to late 20th century, and about 69 percent of homes are single-family, so most of what you are snaking is a private line to the street. A basement floor drain that bubbles when an upstairs fixture drains is the clearest sign your snake is the wrong tool.

Wetlands run along Route 138 in the east and I-95 in the west, and spring thaw loads basements. If a floor drain backs up in heavy rain but the sinks upstairs run fine, do not keep cabling the sink. Ask a plumber for a camera look.

Canton, MA questions on this topic

Do I need a permit to snake a clogged drain in Canton?

Under 248 CMR 3.05, the state plumbing and gas fitting regulation, a permit is not required for clearing a stoppage. Cutting out or replacing a section of pipe is a different job and does need one. Ask the Canton Building Department about your specific job before you start anything beyond clearing the clog.

Can a snake damage my pipes?

Yes, if forced. A cable that is cranked hard against a hard stop can scrape the glaze off a clay pipe, kink and wedge, or push through a thin cast iron wall. Go slowly, stop at resistance that does not give, and have a camera look if the same drain has been cabled more than once.

Why does my drain clog again a week after I snake it?

A snake opens a path through the clog but leaves the grease and scale on the pipe wall. The next soap and hair catch on that coating. Repeated clogs are the cue to ask for a camera look and, if the wall is coated, hydro jetting.

Should I snake a drain that backs up into my Canton basement floor drain?

No. Water rising in the lowest drain in the house points to a blockage in the main line, past the point a hand tool can reach. Stop running water, keep people out of the wet area, and call. Tell dispatch which upstairs fixtures are slow.
